The Canvas

Organizing a board

Select, group into folders, stack, resize, reorder, and clean up. The operations that keep a large board readable.

A board earns its keep once it has a few hundred references on it, which is exactly when it becomes hard to read. These are the tools for that.

Selecting

Click a node to select it. Drag a rectangle across empty canvas to select everything it touches. Partial overlap counts, so you don't have to fully enclose anything.

With a selection active, right-click brings up a floating menu with the operations below. Everything in it has a keyboard equivalent.

Folders

A folder is a container you can name. Three ways to make one:

  • Select two or more nodes and press ⌘G
  • Choose Folder from the right-click create menu for an empty one
  • Drag a folder in from your desktop

Folders show a peek of their contents on the card. Click one and its items animate outward from the folder's position while the rest of the board dims behind a backdrop, so you never lose track of where the folder was. Esc or a click on the backdrop closes it.

Rename a folder from its context menu or by clicking the name inline. Ungroup from the context menu spills the contents back onto the canvas.

Stacks

A stack is for near-duplicates: eight takes on the same hero section, four crops of one screenshot. Select them, right-click, and choose Stack N Items.

Unlike most grouping UI, a stack doesn't replace your content with thumbnails or a count badge. It layers the real, full-size nodes on top of each other. Expanding fans them out horizontally with no vertical drift, each item keeping the size you last resized it to, and the same component instance carries through both states, so an expanded video keeps playing and an expanded stack collapses without a jump.

Resizing

Every node has a grip in its bottom-right corner. Hold Shift to preserve the aspect ratio. Nodes won't go below 120×64.

Resize handles and delete buttons only appear on hover, so a board at rest is just the references.

Ordering and locking

Dragging a node also raises it to the front, which is usually what you want when pulling something out of a cluster. Locking pins a node in place while leaving it selectable, which is useful for a reference you keep as a fixed anchor. The lock button in the bottom-left controls freezes dragging board-wide.

Copying back out

⌘C copies the source of the selected nodes, not a screenshot: the hex value from a swatch, the URL from a link card, the text from a code block. Paste that straight into your editor.

Copy as JSON in the context menu gives you the node's full structured data if you want to script against it.

Deleting and undo

Delete with the hover ✕, Backspace, or the context menu. Nodes dissolve rather than disappearing, so you can see what left.

Warning

Deleting a node also prunes the taste memories it produced. That's the intended way to retract a reference you no longer stand behind, but it means clearing a board clears its profile too.

⌘Z undoes, ⇧⌘Z or ⌘Y redoes, and Clear Canvas is undoable like anything else.

Finding things

Once a board is too big to scan, ⌘K → Search Canvas… lists every node by content (a link by its page title, a stack by its item count) and jumps the camera to whichever you pick.
